Already one of the UK's most accomplished hair stylists, Skyler McDonald is passionate about hair. As Partner and Creative Director of the award winning seanhanna group of salons, she is certainly busy. "My job is very exciting. I get to travel lots, to some pretty cool places and get to work with some really interesting people. But my favourite thing is still looking after my clients in my Putney salon. I have an awesome team there and together we really do have a great energy."
What makes a great hairdresser?
Being a great hairdresser involves many things. Of course you need a technical skill, but it needs much more than that. You need to be able to really get into your client. What would suit their hair, their face shape and of course their lifestyle. Some of my clients are well known household names and investing a lot of time on their image is vital to their job. But many of my clients are either busy mums or business people who want to look good but need styles that are both quick and easy to manage. People often ask if the magic is in the ‘fingers’ but I believe its in the eye. You have to be able to see things in a way that no-one else can see them.
Sky creates a new haircut
One of my favourite jobs is creating new haicuts for my clients. So working with both Sean Hanna and our Artistic Director yesmin O’Brien I have been developing a brand new look called the TIER DROP. It’s a very cool layered haircut which gives our clients a completely versatile style which is both on trend and yet easy to manage. In the above video I was filmed doing an educational demonstration of the new TierDrop haircut for an international online TV company called ‘Scissorboy’ Like the name suggests the layers are cut in Tiers, which creates a slightly disconnected feeling in the internal layers. Often when we are in need of a new look our
biggest challenge is being able to
communicate our likes and dislikes to
our new hairdresser.
A great idea is to go and raid your
old photo albums. look for styles
that you had in the past. Try and
pick out styles that you both liked
and hated. Think about your
reasons why you either loved or
hated a particular look.
Then flick through a selection of
current magazines or check out
current looks online and select
images that interest you and
also images that you really
dont like.
Then when you come to the
salon you have a great starting
point to start talking to your
hairdresser.
Don’t worry if your new idea doesn’t
appear radical. Often a subtle re-adjustment
of shape, layers or texture can be all that’s needed
to make you feel completely different. It’s never about
how much hair you take off but about what you leave
on that counts
